What Problems Does a Dying Alternator Cause?
A dying alternator can be confusing because you might think the problem is the battery when it’s actually the alternator. This is because when either part goes bad, the signs are nearly identical. Plus, the alternator keeps the battery charged, so there is a direct relationship between them. Righteous Auto Care is going to list the problems of a malfunctioning alternator below.
Battery or ALT Warning Light
One of the first things that will happen is your battery or ALT dashboard light will come on. This is to give you a warning that there is a problem with the electrical system that can likely be traced back to either the alternator or battery. This light will stay on until the problem is resolved.
Burning Rubber or Wires
When working properly, the alternator generates a minimum of 13 volts to a maximum of 14.5 volts for your vehicle’s electrical system. When the alternator starts to have problems, it may try too hard to generate voltage, and, as a consequence, you may smell burning rubber or wires.
Flickering or Dim Lights
Another sign that your alternator is going bad is if you have flickering or dim lights. Your automobile’s lights may also get very bright suddenly, only to dim afterward. This is an indication that the alternator is not generating enough power for the lights to illuminate as they should.
Hard Starts/Dead Battery
You will also have difficulty starting your automobile if the alternator is malfunctioning. Specifically, your battery might die because the alternator is no longer charging it. Even if you jump-start your automobile, the battery will be unable to maintain a charge with the faulty alternator.
Malfunctioning Accessories
The accessories are also powered by the alternator. This means that if the alternator is not working properly, you will have problems with your vehicle’s accessories. Examples of the accessories affected include your power seats and windows, your navigation system, and your USB charging ports.
Stalling Constantly
The alternator also provides power to the spark plugs so they can ignite the air and fuel in the combustion chamber. If the alternator is unable to get the spark plugs to fire, your engine will misfire and stall frequently. This, obviously, is extremely frustrating.
Whining or Growling Noises
Finally, whining or growling noises coming from your engine could indicate problems with the alternator belt or the alternator itself. Whining sounds signal a belt that is too loose. Growling noises point to a problem with the alternator’s internal mechanisms. They have likely worn down.
